Dear Rose,
I was prescribed prozac to help ease the pain of fibromyalgia, although the doctor did indicate that he believed it would help with the clusters as well. I had only taken it for six months however, as I was abruptly taken off the med due to an emergency stay in hospital (which had nothing to do with the prozac.) What I can tell you is that I did not receive any relief from the clusters or fibromyalgia. When I withdrew from the prozac, I did experience terrible nightmares for a short while. The doctor explained his decision to prescribe the prozac as helping with the depression that can often result from chronic pain, and how that depression can make the pain worse. This sounds reasonable, however it did not work for me. It is important to note that I had only taken it for six months. Perhaps that was not long enough to experience notable improvement. Personally though, after 25 years of dealing with clusters, and now the fibro, I've had my fill of taking pills and prefer to do without. Maybe someone else here will offer a different experience with Prozac.
As far as the brain tumors/cancer are concerned; I have never heard of this.
With regard to spousal input here, I think that's a great idea though I don't think I could get my husband to offer anything. The status quo here is that I retreat to the basement when clusters arrive, and my family has had their fill in these twenty five years. I'd hesitate to ask them to participate as they've been unwilling participants all these years.
All my best to you,
Jackie M.
