I've had cluster headaches since Feb 96. Nobody knows why they started but they did. Imitrex works well to stop a major attack but I do not want to use it frequently. About May of 98 the Neurologist put me on depakote and started at a relatively low dose and worked it up to 2000 mg. It works fairly well, cosidering that when I started having headaches I had them everyday for 6 months. Now I have them about 2-3 days around my monthly (you know female horomones) and a couple of times without any excuses. I do not have a lot of side effects from the meds except sometimes shakiness of body or speech, hair loss but it all grows back (no bald spots silly just more comes out when I brush it than before), and water weight gain, increased appetite and some anxiety. Oh in case you wondered, I'm almost 28. I hope it works out for you, it has helped me work full time again since the headaches began, now if I can just finish school. Oh yeah get ready for the fatigue, but then you already have that if you have the headaches.
