I have the same frustration. Feel like telling my friends to take a flying leap sometimes. I've been wondering if I should start explaining it relative to burns.
Almost everyone's had sunburn. If that (1st-degree burn) were equal to a "normal" headache, then clusters are like 3rd-degree burns. Actually I had a small case of 3rd-degree burns years ago. I remember it being tremendously painful, but not so bad that I couldn't still think and act sanely. So it's still not perfect, but I wonder if most people might get the point better.
Of course, they have to be listening to get it.
