Loretta:
My heart goes out to you and your husband. What
an incredible nightmare.
I assume you've tried Verapamil as a preventive?
And oxygen as an abortive? What about some of the
newer/more unusual drugs? Ritalin has been successful
for some, and Eplim (sodium valproate) was
successful for Jonathan, who was having a terrible
time. What I've found helpful is to make a list
of all preventive and abortive drugs mentioned on
this message board. Then you can go methodically
down the list, discussing each drug with your
neurologist. Also, it is critical to be seeing
a neurologist who specializes in headaches, and
who deals with a lot of cluster patients. I would
also consider getting your husband to one of the
major headache clinics, like Diamond Headache
Clinic in Chicago.
Read Jonathan's posts for some hope. He was at the
end of his rope and finally found something that
worked. Also, I know how hard this is for the
spouse as well as for the cluster patient. My
husband said he was up for much of the night last night.
This, even though I was sleeping downstairs so I
wouldn't disturb him. He heard me stirring much
of the night, using the oxygen, etc., and was so
worried he couldn't sleep himself.
Take care,
Jackie
