There was a clinic in the Carolinas somewhere who had a 3-pronged attack on CH. First was prednisone to try to break the cycle. At the SAME time they started the patient on Verapamil so that when the prednisone was tapered the V could be ready to take over. Then they prescribed oxygen or Imitrex for breakthrough attacks.
They claimed much success with this method. I will see if I still have the article - it is one I found in the public library health data base on a CD ROM a few years ago.
I don't think prednisone was ever meant for long time use for CH because of its awful side effects.
