Could be the prednisone. My doc put me on that once and it did help. But any steroid can have the side effect of dramatic mood swings and that starts from day one.
Also though, if he has recently been diagnosed and I gather that he has, you must realize that he has been under constant stress with the pain the doctors the tests the medications.... moodswings would be pretty normal under those conditions for anyone and especially a 9 year old.
