Ammonia was used inVictorian times to bring ladies round from faints.
They inhaled the fumes and as often as not had to sneeze.
I don't know where "Valsalva" comes from (see Paco's posting) but in the 19th century the stuff was called "sal volatile".
Intertestingly, there was a guy a while back who posted that ammonia (in fresh manure) was for him a trigger.
