I am a big verapamil proponent. It doesn't work for everyone but when it does work it really works.
The mechanics are simple - verapamil is a calcium channel blocker which is used to treat high blood pressure. It prevents blood vessels from constricting. It does not treat the cause of clusters. When you take verapamil you know you are still in a cluster cycle ( some people on this site call it "the shadow" ).
The pain from clusters comes from blood vessels dilating after they have constricted. If they don't constrict they do not need to dilate and therefore no pain.
