I agree with you, and I have had your same response.
But (there is always a but..) the more important you and your work are, the more they believe in you. The less your work is important, the less they believe to your pain, and they normally think you are a lazy mystifier. And also, in US the problem rises more, because is so easy to discharge you from work.
