First, I'm so sorry you're suffering with the cluster demon.
Second, some unasked-for advice. It would be a
very good idea to see a doctor and get an MRI or
CAT scan, just to be sure nothing is organically
wrong. Also, you're making an incorrect assumption
about drugs and may not realize what else may be
of help to you. For instance, inhaling oxygen
through a face mask at a 7 to 10 liter flow is
extremely effective. Also, there are medications
that can actually prevent the attacks altogether.
I'm on one of these drugs--Verapamil. It does not
slow me down in any way. The only side effect I've
experienced is mild constipation.
It's great that caffeine is so effective in aborting
your headaches. I, and many others on this site,
have also mentioned the benefits of caffeine. My
husband used to brew a pot of coffee before my bedtime, and
put it in a thermos for me for quick access, since
my clusters almost always come at night.
Anyway, by seeing an expert in the field, you
could learn about many other possibilities for
dealing with the clusters. By the way, are you
episodec or chronic?
