The best thing to do is tell him that you are there if he needs you for anything. I also tell him that I won't bother him unless he needs me. I try to stay completely out of his way - don't touch him or even talk to him. Just leave him alone - he'll let you know when he needs you. I sometimes peak in the bedroom and if he's finally over it and asleep I breathe a sigh of relief.
My husband has had these headaches since elementary school. I believe his are episodic. Prednisone has worked well for him, as well as Lithium and Imitrex (the best).
I'm sure your friend will appreciate your patience. Hang in there.
