I must agree with Doc Greg and say that while I am in the middle of a cluster I would rather be left alone, to pace, head bang, suck down my O2 or whatever.
I do however find that once the worst has passed and I return to bed (my headaches are nearly all nocturnal), a scalp massage from my wife is quite soothing and helps me return to sleep.
Of course you friends headaches may not be at night, you may not be there when he has them or indeed he may find that anyone touching his head at the time to be unpleasant. It is really an individual thing.
