I get my episodes of cluster headaches every year by the 5th of December. I just started taking Lithium this year (started in November) and I haven't had one headache. While I won't say that it is a magic bullet for the prophylactic treatment of cluster headaches, I will say that I now am a believer in Lithium.
I've tried prednisone, lidocaine, verapamil, methysergide, etc., etc., over the past few years. None have worked. Incidentally, Imitrex injections work very well for me (usually stop the headache within 3-5 minutes) however, they are much too expensive.
Give the Lithium a try. Let me know how it turns out.
