Calan(verapamil)is the only preventative treatment
we know of. My husband originally started with a regimen of medication to relieve pain including Anaprox, Cafergot,Phenergan and something with codeine in it. The neurologist simultaneously prescribed Calan as a preventative with which he
had had some success.
He gradually built it up in his system taking
it for 6 months then gradually lowered the dose
until he cycled off. He used the pain medicine
exactly once. After the Calan got into his sytem
he never needed to treat it symptomatically again.
After a couple of years following that course of
treatment he didn't use Calan for a while but had
not had a cluster of headaches until recently.
Time between last cycle of Calan and now - 4 years. He just today had to go get more.
