re: side effects, some of what you mention - vision disturbance, lack of concentration, etc I get when the attacks are coming often & heavy, in between attacks, regardless of what I'm trying for meds
past discussions here seem to indicate it as common - "trancelike" sensations, poor concentrations, short-term memory deterioration - many similar diminuitions of mental capacity
I wouldn't worry about it too much - it may be from lack of sleep, a stress-protective mechanism, or a direct part of the CH syndrome, whatever - you're NOT going nuts !
for me, the best path is to accept it, and work around it - don't set myself up to have to multitask, leave lots of time for everything, etc.
