Breathing steam can be very beneficial when I have a bad attack. I don't expect it to prevent future attacks later in the day or night. But it does soothe me and help bring the attack to an end. Alternately I blow hot air from my hair dryer onto my head. It seems to help a lot - actually it is my first and most frequent self-help measure.
But steam serves a dual purpose: it helps clear my nasal passages as well as providing the heat I require.
