To the best of my knowledge, verapamil is, and has been for many years, the #1 best preventative medication for cluster headache. It is interesting to note that several people have posted recently that they are taking the 80mg generic immediate-release tablets 4-6 times a day instead of the time-release type (Calan SR or verapamil ER). Years ago a neurologist gave me the same advice, and I took the generic, immediate-release tabs also. They worked very well. The only problem with them was remembering to take them at all hours of the day. I remember I bought a wrist watch with an alarm feature that was pretty loud, and carried a pill case in my pocket. What a pain in the ass. But, not as bad as CH.
So, if Calan SR or Verapamil ER is not working very well for you, try the 80mg immediate-release type and get yourself an alarm watch.
