Hey, Man, I'm really sorry about you getting ripped off. It's happened to me, and I hate it. I would have reacted the same way; at least when I was your age and working construction I would have. Probably would not have called the cops, though, just beat the other guy's name out of the first one, gotten some buddies together, and gone and gotten all my stuff back before convincing these guys to take up honest work.
Good luck with the cops - it is really unfair, but the law says we are not supposed to protect our property at peril of loss of life or limb. It is just stuff. However, if there was no permanent damage to this asshole, you are probably fine.
Anyway, it is interesting that the "rush" took your CH away. Maybe I will go down to South Tucson and hire a couple of thugs to come out to my house a couple of times a night... nah!
