First of all, most researchers and doctors now beleive that women account for 15-20% of cluster sufferers. Our own imperfect and totally unscientific survey (see the link buttons to the left) shows about 25%.
Prednisone does tend to be a 'first try' kind of drug for many docs. If it doesn't work, many will then go on to Sansert. Pred's side effects are pretty undesireable for many, but Sansert can be deadly if taken for too long a period (over 5 months).
Verapamil (calan) probably has the highest success rate as a preventative. Imitrex is best as an abortive. Oxygen, at 8-10 liters/minute through a full, non-rebreather mask works great for many as an abortive.
