I saw a program recently on that specific therapy, as you described it. However, the guy used either xylocaine, procaine, or novacaine, different types of local anesthetics, perhaps more reliable and effective than cocaine, also "prescribable". Basically, your doc was experimenting with anesthetizing your chiasmic ganglial bundle, which sits right behind the retro-nasal passages, with a known topical anesthetic. Such procedure has shown some effectiveness in about 35% of the patients treated. However, it is effective for a short time afterwhich resistance to the anesthetic has apparently been shown.
