Dear Steve; yes I have experienced the same feeling in my nostril. Everytime, before I get a CH, the very own air I breathe makes my CH intensify. In the past I have held my finger in my nostril in order to avoid any air flowing thru my nose. I have inserted earplugs in my nostril, the kind that is a yellow plug of foam which expands inside after inserting it, it has helped. Your other question regarding sinus; I can never forget the first time I got a CH, I was about 5 yrs. old, (I can never forget this pain!) my mother took me to the neighborhood Doctor. The Dr. said I was suffering from a sinus infection and gave me a shot of penicylum. The CH didn't go away until a few days later, I wanted to die (5 Yrs. old). Ever since, I have correlated my CH's to colds and flues (sinus infections), Drs. don't agree with me.
I had septum and turbinates surgery with no help, in fact, due to my CH's my neurologist discovered an annuarism in the left side of the brain, I had brain surgery (14 hrs.), lost my job, and the headaches didn't go away.
-Regarding the Doxipin, I have never heard of it. If you happen to live in the Miami area my Dr. is David Racher (great Dr.).
-Imitrex pill form, throw them in the garbage and get the injectable form.
-Dicongestant....it screws up your sinus and makes it more sensitive, making your trigeminal nerv more irritated.
-Anti-inflamatory spray: the only one I have tried is lidocaine spray (a cousin of cocaine) which is supposed to make your sinus area numb. It intensified the pain!
I am not a Dr., I'm just sharing with you my experiences with medications and treatments.
Currently I have been taking Verapamil, and it seems to be helping (I wonder how long!).
Good luck and reply....Carlos.
