I do know of another strange tradition used in determining when the arrival of spring will be. In Alberta, Canada. they examine the steam off of horse manuer...really! If the steam settles on the ground in a fog, six more weeks of winter, if it rises in the air, spring is just around the corner...
Leave it to those thrifty Canucks to find a use for the steam off horse poop...
