Dear Oprah,
My mom's birthday is on February 16th, she
will be 50 years old for the year 2000. Sad thing
is that I'm a 20 year old struggling college student
attending school thousands of miles away from home.
I wish I could do something special for her on her
birthday but I can't. I just got this great idea
though, although it might be too late. You have
probably already taped the show you are planning
to air for February 16th. In fact, isn't your birth-
day in early February also. I think my mom said you
were an Aquarius like her that's why both of you
are such great people. Anyway, I thought that I
could make a video tape telling my mother how much
I love and appreciate her, and how I am proud of
her for being the mother that she is which helped
to make me the strong independent young lady that
I am today. Then I can send it to you and you could
air it on your show. She really is an extrodinary
woman. She runs her own daycare facility, and she
started when I was in fifth grade; because when
she was an accountant, working for a nice company,
making alot of money, she wasn't able to spend
enough time with me. So she decided to do what was
best for me and help other children also. She and
my dad divorced when I was 13 and times got really
hard, but she did what she had to do to make sure
that we were okay. The thing that I admire her for
the most was letting me go away for college, because
I know that was hard for her because she loved me
so much. I am her only baby, and she wasn't suppose
to have me, I was a miracle child. And since I've
been down here in New Orleans I've gone through alot
of trails and tribulations, but got through them
alright with God's help, and my mother's constant
support. I am origionally from Los Angeles CA, which
is where my mom lives now. I am currently a Psych-
ology major at Xavier Universtity of Louisiana, in
New Orleans. I know you probably would not be able
to do this for her birthday, but if it is possible
any other time could you have another show where
daughter's celebrate thier mother's. My mom loves
Patti LaBelle and Gladys Knight, and she has never
had the chance to either in concert. I also wanted
to comment on the King Day show you recently aired
discussing the racial segregation in schools. It
was a great show, and the issue needed to be addr-
essed, I just wish that Native Americans could have
had the chance to say their peace. It is like they
are completely over looked and totally ignored. On
the show I heard a white boy state that white people
should be the most superior because they founded
this country. But I wish that someone could remind
them that there were people in this country, and
on this continent before they arrived. I also wanted
to ask if you offered any summer internship. I'm a
Psychology major, but Mass Communications is my
minor. I'm thinking of going into Marketing
Research. So I was wondering if I could be an
intern on your marketing/promotions team. It would
be an honor to work for you. Anyway, if you really
get a chance to read all of this, thank you for
your time.
Sincerely,
Denitrea F. Vaughan
