Personification, as a literary device, works very well to both express and provoke emotional reactions.
As a psychological manifestation or, worse, an intellectually held belief, it leads only to distortion of reality and potentially serious dissociation.
I refer often to the "Demon", but (hopefully) have not fallen into the trap of truly believing this disorder has 'intelligence'. Demon is just shorter and easier to type than cluster headache, which in itself is a sadly lacking understatement of the agony induced by this affliction.
