Hi Jeff,
I have been a sufferer since 1993, and just recently ended my third episode (I hopefully will now enjoy 18 months of releif). The characteristics of my HAs have always been very consistent, 1 late evening (9-11), 1 early morning (2-3) and occaisionally one mid day (but not often). I have always had pretty good success controlling the buggers with caffergot, using one at the early onset to lessen the duration and intensity, and one before bed as a preventative. This episode, I tried an imitrex injection for the first time. It worked great, 3 minutes and pow, gone. That evening however, I had a very uncharacteristic experience. I got about a level 3 HA, and no matter what I did I couldn't get rid of it. Also, every half hour or so it shot up to an 8,9,10 level and lasted for 30 minutes or so. I have not taken an imitrex injection since, and did not experienced this unusuall HA behavior after stopping. I don't know if that helps at all, but good luck.
