Your symptoms sound similar to clusters in some ways, but, as you noted, no where nearly as severe, and I am not hearing all the same symptoms either. I have experienced change in altitude as a trigger for cluster headaches, but upon increase in altitude, and it was a pretty immediate trigger. Have you seen a good ear, nose and throat specialist? It sounds to this non-medical lay person like there is something going on in the sinus cavity that is interfering with a nerve when you experience changes in altitude. This could be due to a current sinus infection or due to scarring from an old one.
