I don't worry too much about anything during the excruciating pain of a Cluster attack, so I just jab the needle all the way to the hilt and I don't worry about cleaning it. I've been doing it this way for a while now and have had no complications. I always keep the syringe thingy in the kit though. When I am down to the last third of a shot I go ahead and use the statdose injector to give myself the final dose. I find that making two little marks on the glass tube is helpful in measuring the appropriate dose of medicine for myself. You MAY find that the 1/3 shots take a bit longer to abort your Cluster attack than the full shots. Perhaps 10-20 minutes longer? Depends on when you give yourself the shot and at what level the attack has progressed to. Good Luck, my friend.
