Dan,
As others have already said, Yes you need a prescription. It is considered a drug!??? My portable tank which is an "E" tank is 10.00 to refill, but only because I bitched to the supplier regarding the price. (they wanted 32.00) The valves, regulator etc. cost my then Insurance Co., 323.00 which is outrageous. But I own it now and they can't take that away from me with out serious damage to their person. I also have a large tank which a good friend who was a welder "gave" me. I fill it for about 21.00 at the local welding supply which, by the way you don't need a prescription for. I have been using it for the whole 12 years I have had these @#*$%% er's and have not suffered any ill effects even though some will say you shouldn't use welding oxygen because it isn't purified and can have toxins like oil and other gaseous substances in it. I lived in Los Angeles most of my life and I'd much rather inhale the air from a welding tank, thank you very much. I live in No. Calif. now so this info. may not be valid wherever you live. I wish you much luck and hang in there. Linda Howell
