I'm a big lithium fan when it works for me (this year it didn't). I don't experience any side effects at all until the dose gets above 1200 mg/day, at which time I get some trembling. Never had a dangerously elevated lithium level, always right near the bottom of the test range.
My doc tests me after 3 months, says as long as I'm not experiencing any discomfort I'm probably OK anyway. He says he has several patients on long-term therapy for psych disorders who have done many years at 1800 mg/day with no ill effects.
It all depends on your make-up though. I see lots of posts on the board that indicate trembling and other effects at doses as low as 600 mg/day....
