Check out the link below for detailed information on lithium. I took it for a couple of years. It was reasonably effective, combined with, as I recall, generic verapamil.
This is a potentially toxic metal, so be very careful regarding dosage and do get regular blood serum-level tests for the first few months at the very least.
I experienced the metallic taste (it is a metal) and the ataxia you mention. I also had pretty severe trembling of the hands; couldn't set down a cup of coffee without spilling it at times. The other side effect I didn't like was pretty severe short-term memory loss.
