I have never tried the cold water, but I find a cold compress sometimes helps.
I keep a wet washcloth in the freezer at all times. When I feel the first tingle of an attack, I grab the washcloth (replace it with another one in the freezer),
and put it across my temple over my eye and breathe through the washcloth over my nose.
This does not prevent an attack, but, as I said, if I catch it at the very beginning, the pain is not as bad and it doesn't seem to last as long.
