I also had a similar experience with Prednisone. Worked one time, didn't the next. I am at the end of a cycle now, and have had very good success with Verapamil SR (180mg 3x per day). It took about three or four days to build up in my system, but then the headaches were (almost completely) blocked. Might want to try it if the Beast returns.
As to the caffiene, I think that may have something to do with its effect on the circulatory system. Gets the meds into your system faster. Some of the "fast acting" aspirin (or aspirin-substitutes) contain caffiene for that reason.
