Fainting happens when blood suddenly leaves the head and the brain's oxygen supply is suddenly reduced or interrupted. Usually the blood rushes to the stomach, leaving the brain short on oxygen and you pass out. After you pass out the body relaxes and the blood flow returns to normal feeding the brain and you wake up. During a cluster attack the pain is caused by too much blood in the head. The high blood pressure in the arteries of the head causes the pain.
