I, too, was diagnosed, after a number of tests, with "essential" high blood pressure. It was explained to me by a nephrologist that it means that there is no other cause, but that my kidneys have decided, on their own, that it is 'essential" that my blood pressure be higher than normal. I was in the 160/110 range. I was having very severe headaches across the back of my head.
After a few false starts with meds that either didn't work, or had unacceptable side effects, we finally found Norvasc. It has lowered my blood pressure to 110/82 and held it consistantly at that level for over two years, with no side effects at all.
High blood pressure is something to be concerned with long term. Don't know if this will work for you, but it sure did for me.
