Sorry, no-one really knows. Check the links to medical info and especially check for Dr. Goadsby's recent findings that CH'rs have excess gray matter around the hypothalmus.
Unfortunately, the answers still elude us, both as to root cause and treatment. This insidious Demon has proven to avoid detection thus far, but there is hope. Part of that hope is OUCH, the Organization for Understanding Cluster Headaches, a non profit some of the site members are in the process of forming. Please consider joining and contributing whatever you can (I don't refer to $ here, but if you happen to be independently wealthy, contributions gladly accepted).
Together, we can advance the cause.
