hi betsey!
made the same experience like you. i slept the last 37 years always on the right side. at this time it is impossible, because this afforts my ch. there must be a coherence with the attitude of the head or the neck. now I try to asleep in a position, where the left arm is under my head or under my pillow.
it also causes an attack, when I try to sleep in the afternoon. O2 always abortes the pain in up to 10 minutes.
beer from bottles or from cans also causes ch. but sometimes beer from barrels doesn't this.
there are some triggers e.g. alcohol, nuts, cheese, which cause ch in 10 - 15 minutes in my case. so i try to avoid these triggers. the same case might be the attitude of my body while I sleep. interesting for me is, that in a case, when the ch has finished (after 50 - 60 minutes) I can eat or drink whatever I want, it doesn't cause a further attack. the same is with the attitude. after an attack in bed, I can lye also on the right side - nothing happens. have you even tried this?
best regards and a painless time
