Steve,
I can't help with an answer about tension headaches 'cause I don't experience them. However, I just absolutely had to post my opinion of your boss's action for all to see!
I once worked for a set of jerks who required a one month advance notice for any vacation days, no exceptions. Then, when you signed up for it they made you sign a paper stating that they reserved the right to cancel your time off at any time. They did it to me five times. We were consulting engineers, and there is absolutely no project that can't be delayed by a week -- I can see this sort of attitude being necessary if you work in a hospital and there's a disaster in your area, but when you're producing plans for buildings it just doesn't make sense. This kind of one-way accommodation is self serving and ridiculous. They would rather cancel my family's vacation than ask a client for an extra week on a project!
I got even with those assholes I used to slave for. I quit, started my own business, and took away half of their clients! By the time three years had passed, two more of their slaves had done the same and they had to close their business. I like to think of myself as being a non-vengeful person , but boy did that feel good!!! They created the monster that ate them up.
Here's hoping that you find the sort of employment that I've found today. No matter what the pay, it's not worth it if it messes with your spirit. Around here, when a crisis comes up we check the vacation calendar FIRST to see who's available for it. Scheduled time off is sacrosanct.
There, I vented. Thanks for the opportunity!
PFD's to ya,
Dave
