Back in the ’Seventies on PBS, there was a series on illnesses that featured a doctor on horseback from Texas. One night , he did a show on headache. One of the scenes showed a guy with a “migraine.” I now realize that he was clearly suffering from a cluster attack. He was down on his knees, banging his head on the floor and screaming in pain. There was no mention whatsoever that this was a cluster attack. As a consequence, it was eight more years before my clusters were properly diagnosed, though, by that time, I’d been suffering from clusters for around twenty years. Because of what I’d seen on TV and my own ignorance plus the general ignorance of doctors, when I went to see a doctor, I told him that I suffered from migraines. Of course, I have to admit that that was a step up from twenty years of being diagnosed with hay fever and being fed Actifed.
