I believe the intent was as follows.
click on a message.. (it opens in a new window)
when you are finished looking at the message, close it by pressing the x on the upper right side of the window (vs your back button). Then you are back to the message list and can click on the next message or thread.

I think its great. I'm just too lazy to right click, then left click - try it at a ten. This new way is great!
