on:
severity of individual attack
level of rest/exhaustion when it strikes
individual tolerance for pain (we all differ in how much of our available physical & mental energy we use in coping with pain)
sorry, but IMHO:
it is a fruitless quest to try to pin these things down too tightly
30 years with them has shown me they may be very very repetitive in some ways, and predictable in a general manner
BUT
if you watch "patterns" long enough, over many clusters, over many years, it seems that there is a GENERAL form they take but the details of individual attacks and clusters can range all over the place, completely frustrating any effort to accurately predict 'em
best bet I THINK is find the most efective remedies for your own case, and do your best to block/reduce each attack as it comes
