Cafergot® tablets have been permanently discontinued because of ongoing stability difficulties.
Cafergot P-B® suppositories have been withdrawn from the market because of Federal Drug Administration decision.
However, Cafergot® suppositories with caffeine, but without the barbiturate and antispasmodic components, are still available. The caffeine does increase the action of the ergotamine in aborting migraine attacks.
If plain Cafergot® is not of sufficient help, 50mg of meclizine can be taken orally if your physician agrees. Usually 50mg of meclizine will give a similar effect to Cafergot P-B®.
Your physician also can prescribe such drugs as Tigan®, Phenergan®, Compazine® or Reglan®, either orally or in the form of rectal suppositories, to take care of the nausea and vomiting the other ingredients with Cafergot® previously helped to alleviate.
Wigraine® brand and generic formulations of ergotamine and caffeine are available and similar in composition
