Caren,
Gary was merely explaining one method for "hydrating"
the O2 that we are breathing, therapeutically.
From the tank, breathing oxygen is extremely dry. Breathing
such a dry gas for several minutes can cause drying of
the lining of the mouth and nasal passages, with resulting
discomfort.
By bubbling the oxygen up, through the water, before inhaling
it, some wetness is put back into the gas. The intention is
to prevent dryness of the mouth and nose. The water used for this
process should be changed frequently to prevent algae growth or
cross-contamination, especially if more than one person is
using the same system.
