John,
For pain killers, I generally go through several kinds, each stronger, when the last one loses it's effectiveness. I start with the standard acetaminophen (tylenol)high strength, 500 mg x2. Then Naproxin (aleive) 350 mg x2. Then Acetamiophen with Hydrocodone (Vicadin) 500mg/5 mg x 1 or 2. Then Acetaminophen with Oxycodone (Percocette)325mg/5 mg 1 or 2. Then Methadone 2.5mg x1 or 2.
Usually the non-narcotics don't work or last long, the vicadin lasts about a week, the percocette 2 weeks, then the methadone until it's over.
It's important to me to take the PK as soon as I get a trigger, a slight stabbing in the eye. Then I have 20-30 minutes until the attack starts. If i am quick and take it soon, I won't notice the attack. It's still there because I don't feel the drugs (no high or light headedness. If I don't take it the attack will always put me to the ground for up to 2-3 hours.
I don't like the drugs, but they work and keep me functioning. I don't take them on a timed basis and haven't gotten any rebound headaches either. Sometimes I can go for long periods (12 hrs) with no attack or PK, that's good.
By the way, my Dr (last 10 years), has prescribed these to me, while we try other combinations to keep them under control. The Number One thing for CH, is to control the Pain.
Good Luck,
Gordon
