Sorry, Jackie, but I have to agree with Dave W. Sounds like migraines because of the length of the attacks. As a former migraine sufferer, I know that ice DOES help as does staying motionless in a completely dark room. The pain is horrible and you can feel every hair in your eyebrows and eyelashes and any eye movement at all is instantly nauseating.
For me, my triggers were food (red wine, bananas, chocolate) and stress. I actually learned to stop them through bio-feedback if I caught the attack early enough (during the "aura") and avoiding all triggers.
My husband is a cluster sufferer and his pain is much more intense and his attacks are 1-2 hours, sometimes 6-8 times a day when he is in a cycle. Very different from migraine. He cannot lay down, or sit still and although he doesn't like a lot of light, he can tolerate some.
