The recent bout that my wife is in came after going to surgery. She is very drug resistant, and they had to gas her instead of IV. The second she woke up, she was in a 10+ cluster. She has to have a temporal biopsy done this week, so we already asked the doctor to do anything but gas her, so I'll tell you if they can IV her, and how it turns out.
