Kim, the reason for the advice you're getting is this: pain meds are not very effective with cluster. A crude analogy is: if you have a broken bone, a pain med will ease you but not give you full relief from pain; only setting and casting the broken bone will do that.
The meds that many of use actually work to stop the process of the headache. The idea is to cut off or stop the physical condition which is believed to be the source of the headache.
Or, think about it this way: pain meds mask the pain; we are trying medications which reduce or eliminate the process which is creating the pain.
