Hi Mark,
We use those gel-filled ice packs that are intended to keep picnic food cold. I keep three in the freezer at all times for my hubby. You're right, ice IS too cold and can hurt the skin but I use one of those cloth gift bags (or a tea towel) and stick the ice bag inside it. Kind of buffers the cold a bit. He just lays it on the back of his neck or right on his face, where-ever he needs it. They are soft and conform to whatever shape you need at the time. When he's in a cycle I put two of them in his lunch box - they keep each other cold and he can have relief with him at all times. AND keeps those lunch goodies safe and cold too. Jeez, starting to sound like Martha Stewart here....please forgive.
Just hate to think of you smacking yourself in the eye with the edge of a pop can at the peak of an attack. These gel-filled babies can take a licking and keep on ticking. Heck, I've even seem them fly in my house when they get too warm! Hence, the reason for THREE of them. Always keep a cold one ready. Plus they won't hurt you, unless you eat them. I guess pop has the advantage there, right.
Thanks for posting your suggestion - that's what we're here for.
Pain free days ahead.
