Hi Sally,
I know what you're talking about, other people cannot understand the pain we have, i can understand that. For a doctor NOT taking any action in a situation like that is a disgrace to the medical profesion.
I remember some months ago, my wife drove me to the ER after using 8 shots of Imitrex in 24 hours, did not have the guts to shoot more, but it really was a killer, never had one like this before. I ripped the paint of the wall with my nails, pushed my nails in my head so hard it was visible after a week, bumped my head to the wall, so, all the normal things we do. When arriving at the ER, my wife told the doc there that I had a prescription for O2 from my own doc, but did not have it yet. Can you please give my husband some O2? Doc called the neuro, neuro said no, there's no scientifical proof that O2 works so he's not going to get that. Give some painkiller, send him home. Doc gave me the european equivalent of tylanol. My wife almost killed him! After a lot of pursuasive talking they gave me O2, pain got less after 15 minutes and I couls sleep, did so for some hours. Waking up, I was told not to come again! Went home, went to bed, slept for an hour and got anotherone. Put the needle in my back right away, what the H@#$, better cardiac arrest then going through that BS again. Some weeks later, btw, I received the bill from the neuro! 150 guilders for ONE phonecall, lasting two minutes. I sent it back, stating that when he wanted to get paid, he had to do his work right. Never heard of him again.
On the other hand, there are a lot of good doctors around. I found some, took a while. Best advise I can give you or your niece: go out and find a doc, neuro, whatever, who listens to you, is willing to do some research and really helps you. They DO exist!
Best of luck, wishing you and your niece painfree days only. Rob.
