To me, shadows are the dull, left over pain, that I still feel in the left side of my head when I'm not actively having a headache. It kinda hangs around to remind you of what you've just been through and keep you from getting too comfotable. I think what I call shadows are the left over pain from the swollen nerves and vessels.
My left shoulder/neck do get tight during a cluster (left side HA). I'm also not a pacer. when I get hit I sit still, in a chair, leaning forward, ice bag on temple/face until it gets to sore to touch and then move it to the back of my neck. My stiffness is from tensing during the attack and also from holding the ice bag.
