Sue,
Listen to what everyone is saying they are right there is NO excuse for violence.Yes the pain is unbearable, but that is NOT your fault you do not have to tolerate that kind of behavior.

(just a thought)he may be focusing his anger towards you to help him deal with the pain.using you as a focal point, if so, he has to find a new one.I'm not making excuses for his behavior, just offering my opinion.I do not feel anyone who suffers from C/H has a right to focus their anger or frustrations on any living creature.

For myself i stay away from everyone hide somewhere usually in the basement. My wife knows to stay away and let me handle it in my own way.Not that she doesn't care it's just the best help she can give me is to stay away and let me be.

This amy or may not help but here goes. Get him to buy a punching bag, or you buy him one for a gift let him focus on that and take his anger out on the bag. You have to make him understand that you will not tolerate that behavior from him regardless of the reason. Do so quickly and lets hope that you two can come up with something.
If not walk away from him before its to late and you can't walk away.

Understand Sue this is how i see it and its my own opinion on the situation, but i hope waht i have said can help you in some way.

take care of yourself
Les
